In 1880s England, Henry Hobson, a stingy, drunken widowed shoe shop owner, bullies his three daughters—Maggie, Alice, and Vicky—by forbidding them from dating. When he finally allowed his two youngest daughters to marry without a dowry, Maggie (30 years old) who was considered "too old" rebelled. With her ingenuity, she decided to marry Willie Mossop, an uneducated but talented employee at her shop, as a form of resistance.
